Body-shaping procedures are designed to improve the look of your body, usually by tightening the skin and/or removing excess fat. Two of the most effective ways of enhancing the body through body-shaping is with liposuction or with an advanced procedure called SlimLipo or LifeSculpt. A plastic surgeon trained in both procedures can help you determine which of these body-shaping methods will yield the best results for you.
What are your Body Sculpting Goals?
Body-shaping, or body sculpting as it’s often called, is designed to:
– Slim the physique and body contours
– Create a more proportioned look
– Increase comfort and confidence
Women typically turn to body sculpting to remove excess fat from their stomachs, thighs, hips, underarms, breasts and areas beneath the chin. Men, on the other hand, use body sculpting to remove fat from around their waist, under the chin or to reduce breast tissue.
Requiring a general anesthetic, liposuction works by sucking excess fat out of the targeted areas of the body. The procedure may require multiple incisions and often accompanies skin tightening procedures once the fat is removed. A plastic surgeon uses a small tube called a cannula, which is attached to a vacuum to suck out the fat. Before the fat can be removed however, it must be prepared correctly using one of the following methods.
– Tumuscent liposuction – A sterile solution is injected that helps reduce pain and constrict blood vessels.
– Ultrasound liposuction – A metal rod is inserted that emits ultrasonic energy to rupture and liquefy fat cells for easy removal.
– Powered liposuction – The rapid back-and-forth motion of the cannula vibrates and breaks up fat cells for removal.
SlimLipo is different from most traditional forms of liposuction in that it uses lasers to melt fat and tighten skin. “SLIM” stands for:
– Melting of fat
This procedure was developed by Palomar Medical Technology, Inc. in 2008, and it is much more advanced and less invasive than the liposuction methods listed above. There is less downtime after having the LifeSculpt procedure, and it is less expensive. The biggest benefit of this liposuction method is it can usually be done without general anesthetic.
The SlimLipo procedure still uses a fluid injection to prepare fat for removal, but instead of the aggressive and more traumatic removal methods of traditional lipo, SlimLipo uses lasers to melt the fat and tighten the skin all in one step, essentially eliminating the need for an additional skin tightening procedure. There is also less bruising and scarring, which leads to a quicker recovery time.
Which Method is Best?
Which body sculpting method is best for you will be determined by several factors, and your doctor will help you to decide. Ideal candidates have a healthy body weight, elastic skin, but simply need to get rid of excess fat in certain areas. Age isn’t necessarily a factor, although young skin tends to be more elastic. Schedule an appointment with your local plastic surgeon to find out more about which body-shaping method will work best for you.
